Why do I feel nauseous after drinking plain green or black tea?

My mouth actually salivates and my tummy feels like it wants to vomit. I want to drink tea, for the health benefits but this side effect is not pleasant. I have always drank tons of black coffee, so I don’t believe its the caffeine. I did read somewhere it could be the tannins? Does anyone know what they are and why? I end up drinking a ton of water to make it go away or eat something even if not hungry…thanks.

Tannins are a type of polyphenol. In other words, they are a type of antioxidant. As you mentioned, tannins are found in tea. However, I don’t think that is what’s causing the side effects since coffee does contain tannins too. Coffee and tea are the main sources of caffeine as well. Sometimes the side effects you mentioned are linked to large quantities of caffeine. But, you drink drink lots of coffee so caffeine is probably not the reason as you said. I think it is probably a case of sensitive stomach since green tea is usually much more astringent than coffee. Try having your tea with a bit of milk. That might help.

    Hope this helps!
